Surf’s up with Level Water

In September, Level Water partnered with the Wave Project to deliver a surf and swim weekend with 6 of our families from across the country.

Funded by the Finisterre Foundation and taking place in the stunning Croyde Bay, the weekend involved young disabled people between the age of 6 and 16, with a wide range of swimming levels and experiences spending the mornings showing off in the hotel pool and then the afternoon catching waves with the Wave Project and their amazing surf instructors and adapted equipment.

It was simply incredible to see our swimmers put into action their skills, confidence and courage that they have been developing as part of their lessons, and the surf instructors made the day so fun, engaging and helped create memories that will last a lifetime. Head of Programmes, Matthew Maguire who was present at the weekend says ‘Surf Camp was so good!!! We were really lucky to have such great weather and such amazing and determined young people present. It takes a lot of courage to get on a surfboard in the sea, and so much resilience to get back on the surfboard after being knocked off! All of our families showed how confident and amazing they are.”

Level Water’s vision is to kickstart a lifelong love of water for young disabled people, and we are dedicated to helping children and families develop essential swimming skills so that people can go on to enjoy the beauty and comfort of water in a safe and fun environment, activities such as the surf camp embed aquatic skills and being able to take part with other young people and your family has a huge impact on everyone involved. This is echoed by Sarah, one of the parents who was present, “The hotel was amazing, the surfing was amazing, the food was amazing, and it was great to spend a bit of time with other families. The kids had a blast and so did we!”. Arthur, one of our amazing swimmers present agrees, saying ‘mummy this is the best day of my life, I want to come again!”

Surf Camp, organised by Level Water and hosted by the Wave Project, truly showcases the positive impact that immersive, fun, and new events can have on children and families. By combining adventure with skill-building, the charity has demonstrated the importance of swimming and how once it is taught, people can experience amazing things.
