Transforming Swimming in Bristol: Fiona Taylor

Fiona in her element

Fiona's Journey with Level Water

Fiona Taylor is a dedicated Inclusion Specialist with Level Water, who is transforming the swimming landscape in Bristol by ensuring children with disabilities have access to tailored swimming lessons.

A Passion Ignited

Fiona's affinity for teaching in the water began during the COVID-19 pandemic. Back then, she taught small groups and individuals at a private swim school, often focusing on those with Special Educational Needs (SEN). This experience highlighted a significant demand for specialised lessons within mainstream leisure centres.

Championing Inclusion with Level Water

At Level Water, Fiona dedicates her time to providing one-on-one lessons. Her approach is holistic:

  • Personalised Progression: She supports students to progress from individual sessions to group classes, particularly the kids who would benefit from social communication skills needed to share space with other children.

  • Beyond Labels: Recognising that individual needs can be overlooked or misinterpreted as behavioural issues, Fiona emphasises understanding each child's needs are unique.

  • Innovative Teaching: Using tools like Swim England awards and pre-Stage 1 certificates, she motivates her students. She keeps them engaged by researching their specific conditions, and their favourite things before lessons and incorporating them into the session. She prints and laminates pictures to play games like "hot potato" to practice log rolls.

A Teacher of Many Skills

Fiona's dedication to inclusion extends beyond the pool:

  • Community Support: Previously a community support worker, she assisted adults in achieving independence, offering guidance on practical matters like self-care and personal paperwork.

  • Academic Mentorship: She teaches pre-teens and college students, including those with Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs), supporting subjects like mathematics.

Advocate for All Creatures

Outside her professional roles, Fiona is deeply committed to animal welfare. She has been dedicated to rescuing animals, including horses, cats, and guinea pigs. Her efforts include neutering cats in underprivileged areas and helping rescue a number of horses last year.

Through her life’s work and volunteering, Fiona exemplifies the spirit of inclusion, making sure that both individuals and animals receive the support and opportunities they deserve.

Fiona speaks about teaching children in Level Water lessons “teaching them makes me a better teacher, and I’ve grown as a person because of it.”
